Victory Parade

UAE won the football Gulf Cup the first time ever, so there was this huge impromptu victory parade on the weekend. It was very enthusiastic (football is a big deal in this country!) & traffic came to a halt on the main highway of the city for the festive cars to pass. Some of the cars were screen-printed with the faces of the football heroes, some had random graffiti...well tacky, but I think its rather sweet the way winning something (even a regional footfall tournament!) brings so much cheer & togetherness in people.

What cricket is to sub-continent, soccer is for GCC. Oman, the losing finalists, were given a royal reception on their arrival a couple of days back...and it is still continuing!

Hi Kishor!

Thats true. And UAE's success rate at football is as bad as India's at cricket. So when they win its a big deal :)

Radha, I spent 10 years in Dubai and it's been nearly 7 years since I left. I have never stopped missing the place and so I am indebted to you for the posts and for the updates on this city - thanks so much and yeay that they won the football Gulf Cup!

Will be back for a longer visit later. I am especially keen to read your thoughts on the Kiran Desai book.

Hi Lotus,

Wow, didnt know you've lived in Dubai!

Well the Kiran Desai book is brilliant. She writes like a poet. And the stories are just touching for every Indian living abroad.
