The Cruise along the beautiful Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam is one of its kind. It comprises of almost 2000 little limestone islands emerging out of a green-blue ocean. They say the limestone hills are a result of millions of years of evolution & erosion by the waves & climatic conditions. Its beautiful. We took a short 2-day cruise through the bay & were mesmerised by how gorgeous and spooky an effect the cliff-n-caves landscape can create. I can honestly say, I've never seen anything like it before!

I spent 2 months at Halong Bay doing a community project for the "cruise operator" you speak about. Junks was what they were known as..as a perk we got to travel on these junks free of charge for a 2 day cruise. I survived on energy bars during those two days but a great experience nevertheless. Just so that you know, their waste disposal is pretty archaic - all goes directly into the sea at designated spots during the cruise. So you have to be careful of where you dip your toes.

Did you do the caves and then the kayaking?

Haha, no this one was far from the junk boats you're talking about. There was fine dining, a spa onboard, Vietnamese cooking classes & Taichi in the mornings :) I was actually very surprised with how well these cruise operators are organized. They've built their own ports with luxury lounges, their own crews, a sun-deck that turns into a clubbing area by night; was pretty impressive.

We did go to the caves, but couldn't go kayaking as we were traveling with little K.

Either my work for them really transformed the industry or I was on the wrong side of the Bay. I never saw any boat that even remotely looked what you describe below. And no offence - but I think I will pass the Vietnamese cooking classes. Could never stand that food for a staunch vegetarian I am.

Must be your work! :)
We booked ourselves in the Paradise Luxury Cruise...quite liked it.

You should stay there longer next time! Carnival Ha Long 2012 just took place few days ago!

@ Taste for Travel - I wish we could've planned a longer trip; but (a) we were not sure our 3-year old would be able to handle more than 3 days of living on a ship; and (b) we have that job which pays our bills to come back to :):) Would've loved to see the carnival! Someday soon!
