Movies based on books are almost never as good as the book. The only exception I can think of is 'The Godfather' where the movie gets the essence and feel of the book itself. Are there any more?

'a beautiful mind' was more powerful as a film than the book
Ummm...maybe...yeah, the book is more biographical and not in a story-telling kind of format...whereas the movie is more abt the human aspect of John Nash's life.
Not many people really care abt the Game Theory, mathematical achievements & other factual details...maybe a mathematics student would find the book better..?
I can think of two cases where I found the book too disjointed and vague but the movie fleshed out the book's spirit - English Patient and Big Fish!!!
I found "Great Expectations" better than the book; I liked the adaptation, and probably also because Dickens is a tough read.
I didnt know 'English Patient' was based on a book. And I didnt know 'Big Fish' was a movie. So cant comment on both.
'Great Expectations': I think I like the book better. I hardly remember the movie, but still remember the book.
Radha, you should watch Big Fish...it is a beautiful movie - always makes me tear up a lil too!!!!

for lack of time or may be enthusiasm these days, I have been seeing more movies than read and saw 'the kite runner'. worth watching. Wonder if I shud read the book now.
Also, Found the movie 'Angela's ashes' did justice to the book. 'Memoirs of a Geisha' was an excellent read but the movie is disappointing.

I would highly recommend reading "The Kite Runner". Its such a sensitive book.
I agree "Geisha" was a much better book than a movie. The movie somehow ended up being boring and un-authentic.
Haven't read "Angela's Ashes" though. Recommended?
